DR Congo: One Year On, Goma Protest Survivors Say Justice Has Not Been Done

One year after a deadly protest in Goma, survivors and families of the victims say justice has not been done.

On 27 July 2022, Congolese security forces fired live ammunition at protesters in Goma, killing at least 13 people and injuring dozens more.

The protesters were demonstrating against a proposed constitutional amendment that would have allowed President Félix Tshisekedi to run for a third term in office.

The government has since withdrawn the proposed amendment, but no one has been held accountable for the killings.

  • Survivors and families of the victims say they are still waiting for justice.
  • They say the government has failed to investigate the killings properly or to prosecute those responsible.
  • They are calling for an independent investigation into the killings and for those responsible to be held accountable.

The government has said that it is committed to investigating the killings and prosecuting those responsible.

However, survivors and families of the victims say they have little faith in the government's promises.

They say the government has a history of impunity and that they do not believe that it will hold those responsible for the killings accountable.

The United Nations has also called for an independent investigation into the killings.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, said in a statement that "the Congolese authorities must ensure that those responsible for these killings are held accountable and that the victims and their families receive justice."
