Bernie Sanders to Run for Reelection in 2024

The Independent Senator from Vermont Will Be 82 Years Old When He Faces Voters Again

Sanders is the Senior United States Senator from Vermont and Has Served in the Senate Since 2007

Bernie Sanders, the 81-year-old independent senator from Vermont, has announced that he will run for reelection in 2024. Sanders made the announcement in a video posted on his Twitter account on November 29, 2023.

"I am running for reelection to the United States Senate because I believe that we need to continue fighting for the working families of this country," Sanders said in the video. "We need to continue fighting for Medicare for All, for a Green New Deal, and for a fair and just economy."

Sanders is a longtime advocate for progressive policies and has been a vocal critic of the Trump administration. He is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and caucuses with the Democrats in the Senate.

Sanders is the longest-serving independent in congressional history. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1990 and to the Senate in 2006. He is the only independent to have served in the Senate since 1991.

Sanders is expected to face a tough challenge in the 2024 election. The Republican Party is likely to field a strong candidate, and Sanders will also face competition from within his own party. Several Democratic senators are considering running for president in 2024, and Sanders could face a primary challenge from one of them.
